Among the persons between the age of 12 and 18; 54.2% only study, 18.1% only work, 8% both work and study and 18.9% do not study and do not work1.


Health  
Teen age pregnancy In Honduras, 22% of women between the age of 15 and 19 have been pregnant and 17% of them are already a mother and 4% are pregnant for the first time.2.

Abortions

In the year 2006, the public health system has registered more than 9,0003 abortions (Note from the translator: In this case, the word “abortion” stands for both miscarriage - here classified as a “natural abortion” - and an induced abortions). It is not specified by the source which of both is reflected in this number. From these 9,000 abortions, 22% correspond to women of between the age 10 and 19, whereas 78% corresponds to women of 20 to 49 years.

Child mortality

The higher the level of education from the mother, the lower is the level of child mortality. If the mother has a higher level of education, the child mortality rate is 20 for 1,000 born alive, while it is 37% for 1,000 born alive when mothers have received no academic education.4.

Drug abuse

The average age for boys and girls to start smoking cigarettes is 13 years, to consume alcohol is 13.6 years, tranquilizers 13.3 years, smoking marihuana 14.5 years and cocaine 14.8 years5.

VIH/SIDA

In Honduras, in the year 2007, 12.5% of the population between the ages of 15 to 25 lives with AIDS.6.
84.9% of persons who live with AIDS, registered between 1985 and 2005 have reported that they contracted AIDS through heterosexual sex; 3.3% through bisexual sex; 3.1% through homosexual sex and 01% through infected needles for drug consumption. 6.3% were connected to mother – child infection7.

With regards to the level of poverty in Honduras, 30.2% of teens live with one basic need unsatisfied, 19% have two basic needs unsatisfied and 11% live with three or more basic needs unsatisfied. Those basic needs refer to housing, basic sanitary level, access to water, basic education and a rudimentary economic capacity to achieve a minimum level of consumption.8.
